Cutting and Tailoring

Bespoke is only for you.

The process begins with a conversation to understand you, your lifestyle, your sartorial needs, and how you want to feel in the finished piece. We shape the garment around your character to ultimately reflect you. Together we choose fabrics, details, and finishes that speak your language.

Your physical form is meticulously measured and a hand drafted pattern cut that is unique yours. A lay of the cloth is made with the pattern and the fabric cut. A basted fabric shell is crafted by hand and further refined to your body shape during a first fitting.

Over time your creation is gradually brought into existence with extensive hand tailoring that employs time honoured construction methods that are now seldom used in the clothing industry. Your second fitting to make any final refinements is near the completion of the garment. Finally, the item is finished with hand sewn linings and buttonholes and delivered to you for years of wearing pleasure.

Style, Sustainability, and Fabrics

Our garments are shaped by style rather than fashion. Your investment in an item demands that it is part of your wardrobe for many years to come. The style of the item will be timeless and thus will not become redundant after the current fashion season. We focus on the structure and form of the garment to enhance your own features.

Though the item may be designed for a very specific occasion it is intended to be worn well beyond that moment in time. To enhance this sustainable approach, the construction of the garment has many opportunities built into it for future alterations however your body may change over time.

The fabric suppliers working with us have been chosen to provide only the best quality and reputation. They have been selected from across Europe and often we have personally visited them to explore their sustainable source materials and localised manufacturing techniques.

Ken Woodman - Cutter and Tailor

Cutter and Tailor

Cutting and Tailoring came to me. I had been an Architect for many years and ran my own architectural practice. I had worn many formal office clothes and suits but never really been happy with the choice and opportunity provided in Australia. Surely, I could do better, I though, and thus commenced a fashion course and fell in love with tailoring. It has similar attributes to architecture with client interaction, design, material selection, construction, service and delivery of a quality product.

I went on to study under the Savile Row trained tailor, Rory Duffy, working out of Monaghan, Ireland. I learnt the authentic traditional trade of cutting and tailoring directly from this skilled craftsman.

I am drawn to the formal structured style of English tailoring while also admiring the softer casual Italian look. The artisan method of hand-crafting garments is very important to me. Crafting a pattern that encapsulates a body, feeling the fabric under my hands as it is cut, shaping it with the needle and the iron, finishing buttonholes by hand, adding some individual quirkiness, embracing the perfection of imperfections, these are the things that I love.

Location

The Beechworth Sartorialist is in the heart of heritage Beechworth in the hills of northeast Victoria.

I love the landscape and the seasons of this region. It brings the changes of weather and, thus, the clothing of light wools in spring showers, open linens in the hot summer sun, bright cashmeres in cooling autumn, and warm tweed in winter snows. All our work is undertaken right here in Beechworth. No part of the process is sent anywhere else. The meeting with clients, the designing, cutting of patterns, tailoring the garment, and the final finishes are all solely completed in Beechworth.

A truly local artisan process.
